Workshops & Speakers for You

Workshops

Creation Care 101: Theological Grounding and Our Moral Call (Kendyl, Monica, Faith, Mark, Shereka)
1-1.5 hours or 2-4 hours

  • Do people of faith have a moral responsibility to care for the planet? This workshop is an introduction and includes deep conversation around theology. It also includes an introduction to some of the most pressing environmental issues.

Creation Care 201: An Intro to Solar and Saving Money through Energy Efficiency (Kendyl, Monica, Faith, Mark)
1-1.5 hours

  • This workshop is an introduction to solar energy and energy efficiency in Virginia. You will find out what is available to you and your faith community, hear stories from other faith communities around Virginia and learn how going green can help to save money in the long run.

Women and the Environment (Kendyl, Monica, Faith)
1-1.5 hours or 2-4 hours

How does gender intersect with the environment and spirituality? In this workshop, we will discuss the concept of ecowomanism, which, as explained by Rev. Dr. Melanie L. Harris, one of the main thinkers in ecowomanism, “centers the voices and perspectives of women from African descent as they engage earth justice. Drawing upon African cosmology these perspectives understand the earth as sacred.”

2019 Environmental Updates and Action Opportunities (Kendyl)
1-1.5 hours

During this workshop, you will find out more about the top environmental issues in Virginia surrounding climate disruption and energy use and how your faith community can get involved.

What is Environmental Justice? (Kendyl, Faith)
1-1.5 hours

What does it look like to view environmental issues through a justice and moral frame? This workshop will dig into environmental disparities and their causes in Virginia and the United States.

Creation Care for the Evangelical Community (Cizik)
1-1.5 hours

This workshop is done in partnership with the New Evangelical Partnership for the Common Good, which seeks to educate, inspire, and mobilize Christians to acknowledge and prevent human-caused climate change. This workshop would be conducted by Rev. Richard Cizik.

Who’s Got the Power? (Power Mapping)
Virginia Civic Engagement Table – Citizen Training Academy
1.5 hours

This 90 minute class will teach you how to create issue-based power maps. Power maps are an important tool for understanding how to make change. Until you know who has the power and how to move potentially powerful allies, it will be hard to see the positive policy changes we are all working towards. You’ll leave this session with a power map on an issue that you’re working on and a better understanding of how to get policy changes.

Holding Our Elected Officials Accountable
Virginia Civic Engagement Table – Citizen Training Academy
1.5 hours

Voting is only the first part of getting the change we need. Whether the people we elect are our friends or our foes, we need to hold them accountable for what they do as legislators. This training will teach you all the components of an effective accountability campaign and why it’s so important. You’ll leave the training with your own plan that you can execute with the help of your friends and neighbors.

Activism for Busy People
Virginia Civic Engagement Table – Citizen Training Academy
2 hours

All of us are trying to be more involved citizens and activists and somehow manage to have a life, hold down a job, spend time with our families. It can be overwhelming and very stressful. This two hour class will teach you how to be efficient and effective. Find out how to do this work year round, both electing good people and holding them accountable, without burning out and walking away!

Cost

A suggested donation of $200 covers travel, the speaker or facilitator, materials and a small portion to the organization for coordination by staff.

If the suggested donation presents a barrier to your faith community, please email us at contactus@vaipl.org.

Speakers

We can connect your congregation with guest speakers from different faith traditions who can tell the story of what is happening to our world and invite your community to reflect on their call to respond as a faith community. Email contactus@vaipl.org to schedule a program.
