Last week, VAIPL hosted the 2022 Virginia Environmental Justice Retreat for Legislators. This two-day retreat at the Boar’s Head Resort in Charlottesville created a space for Virginia legislators to discuss advancing environmental justice in Virginia.
The retreat was also an opportunity for legislative leaders to decompress and practice self-care with wellness activities such as guided art meditations and a sound ‘bath’.
The 2022 Virginia Environmental Justice Retreat evaluated ongoing environmental injustices through a moral and values-based lens. We considered the urgency and the opportunities for climate and ecological justice for communities across Virginia. Legislators reflected, heard directly from experts, participated in dialogue, and aligned their priorities with climate and environmental justice.
Del. Jackie Glass, representing Virginia’s 89th District, said, “For me, the retreat honored the space needed to express the urgency of environmental justice education and action. This convening of legislators, advocates, and stakeholders is exactly what will prevent Virginians from being victims of the plans and ambitions of others. I am grateful for the experience connecting me to new allies, ideas, and opportunities.”
Ultimately, this retreat proved to deepen a sense of community, spark insightful conversation, and inspired hope for climate justice work now and in the future.
