For the month of February, we wish to introduce environmental justice heroes. This week, we highlight a passionate young climate activist and author: Venessa Nakate. She is a climate activist from Uganda who aims to bring more attention to the voices of activists from Africa.
Venessa Nakate graduated from Makerere University Business School with a business administration degree in marketing. She has gone on to spearhead a movement to save the Congo’s rainforest, which has grown into a widespread effort across Africa and Europe. Nakate has been involved and led multiple groups: Youth for Future Africa, the Rise Up Movement, and the Green Schools Project.
Virginia Interfaith Power and Light will have an upcoming book discussion on Nakate’s novel, A Bigger Picture: My Fight to Bring a New African Voice to the Climate Crisis. For the month of March, join us for this weekly reflection on the unseen inequalities within the climate justice movement, and for a closer look at the journey Venessa Nakate took that led her to becoming an important voice for environmental justice.
