A recent study by the University of North Carolina found that transit injustice is quite literally killing our communities. This study estimated that 485 Virginians died prematurely in 2016 due to transportation emissions. The study’s authors wrote, “On road vehicular emissions contribute to the formation of fine particulate matter and ozone which can lead to increased adverse health outcomes near the emission source and downwind.”
Therefore, transit justice is not only a necessity to protect our environments—but also, our lives. We must continue to advocate for equitable transit justice that makes investment in decreasing carbon pollution and protecting the health of our communities! Join VAIPL as we advocate for increased access, affordability, and amenities for public transit riders in new infrastructure spending.
